Original black-and-white publicity photograph showing actress Lupe Velez who is likely shown in one of her roles as she wears an elegant dress and talks or listens on the phone. Printed on glossy paper. No date, circa 1940s-1950s. 8" x 10." "695-22" is printed in the lower-right corner of… the photo. Photo is virtually pristine and intact except for a few minuscule scratch marks and slight age toning. A Fine copy. Lupe Velez (1908-1944) was a Mexican actress, dancer, and singer. Velez was part of Hollywood's "Golden Age" and her talent was discovered after people from Hollywood heard of her successful acting career in Mexico. Velez was often typecast as a beautiful "spitfire" and starred in a number of films. Some of the studios she worked with were RKO Radio Pictures, Universal Studios, and Columbia Pictures. Among her notable roles was her recurring portrayal of a fictional character, Carmelia Lindsay, in the eight-movie series, Mexican Spitfire. This film series was significant in that is was the first time a Mexican actress in the United States starred in eight successive movies. Sadly, Velez had a tumultuous personal life and intentionally overdosed on the barbiturate, Seconal.

Velez (1908-1944), born July 18, 1908, San Luis Potosi (the daughter of a prostitute), Mexico; died December 13, 1944, Beverly Hills California, Mexican-born screen actress, noted for her 7 "Mexican Spitfire" films and her tragic suicide; married to Johnny Weissmuller 1933-1938; film career 1927-1944; in 1924, Lupe started that career on the Mexican stage and wowed audiences with her natural beauty and talent; by 1927, she had emigrated to Hollywood where she was discovered by Hal Roach who cast her in a comedy with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy; Douglas Fairbanks cast her in his feature film "The Gaucho" with himself and Mary Pickford; Lupe played dramatic roles for five years before she switched to comedy; in 1933, she played the lead role of Pepper in "Hot Pepper." Lupe appeared in three fine comedies, "Strictly Dynamite", "Palooka" and "Laughing Boy"; by now her popularity was such that a series of Mexican Spitfire films were written around her; Velez portrayed Carmelita Lindsay in "Mexican Spitfire" 1939; "The Mexican Spitfire Out West" 1940; "Mexican Spitfire’s Baby" 1941; and "Mexican Spitfire’s Blessed Event" 1943 among many others. Audiences loved her in these madcap adventures but it seemed, at times, she was better known for her stormy love affairs. She married one of her lovers, Johnny Weissmuller, but that only lasted five years and was filled with battles. Lupe certainly did live up to her nickname. She had a failed romance with Gary Cooper, who never wanted to wed her. By 1943, her career was waning. She went to Mexico in the hopes of giving herself a jump start. She gained the best reviews yet in the Mexican version of "Nana."; bolstered by that movie, Lupe returned to the US where she starred in her final film as Pepita Zorita in "Ladies’ Day"; on December 13, 1944, tired of yet another failed romance with Harold Raymond and pregnant with his child, Lupe committed suicide with an overdose of seconal. She was only 36 years old.
