Die einhellig überlieferte Lesart terrae wurde von den älteren Herausgebern des bellum Gallicum athetiert, weil sie kaum als echt gelten kann: der Begriff terra konnotiert ja auf Latein den Gegensatz mare. An unserer Stelle steht aber terrae Galliae im Gegensatz zu populi Romani, was sehr auffällig ist. Denn es geht nicht an unserer Stelle um den Gegensatz terra populus, sondern um den Gegensatz zwischen Gallia und populus Romanus. Bei der Behandlung dieses Topos unterscheiden die Autoren gewöhnlich zwischen indigenae, advecti und mixti. Unter indigenae verstand man die ,ursprüngliche Bevölkerung eines bestimmten Gebietes im strikten Sinne, d. h., man war der Meinung, daß die in Frage kommende Bevölkerung in eben dem Lande, in dem sie wohnte, seit der Urzeit und der Entstehung der Menschen, gelebt habe. Advecti entspricht unserem Begriff ,Immigranten' und bildet einen Gegensatz zu indigenae, d. h., advecti bezeichnet eine im Lande nicht ursprünglich seßhafte Bevölkerung; diese ist aus ihrer Urheimat dorthin ausgewandert, wo sie jetzt ansässig ist. Unter mixti verstand man eine ,Mischung' von Eingeborenen und später Zugewanderten.
