Impressão adornada com belas xilogravuras, desde iniciais decoradas no prólogo e na primeira página numerada, a cabeções formados por motivos tipográficos. Na frente do último fólio encontra-se a marca de impressor, uma bela gravura emblemática com o mote «Cedat». Texto enquadrado por esquadria de filete duplo em todas as páginas, tendo no espaço compreendido entre os dois filetes as referências das obras citadas no texto. Primeiras páginas com licenças e aprovações de Fr. Manuel Coelho, Bartolomeu da Fonseca, Rui Pires da Veiga, Saraiva; e prólogo aos leitores. A seguir ao primeiro caderno de páginas não numeradas, encontra-se um fólio volante com as ? erratas que interrompem ò sentido ? As páginas não numeradas finais apresentam índice remissivo, uma outra folha de erratas e um cólofon que inclui a marca do impressor. Exemplar com ex-libris de J.G. Mazziotti Salema Garção no verso da pasta anterior, incluindo um brasão com as armas da família. Tem pequenos rasgos e falhas de pele à cabeça da lombada. Primeira edição muito rara. A segunda edição foi publicada apenas no século XVIII, em 1786, na oficina de Francisco Luís Ameno e a terceira em 1803 na Impressão Régia. Obra emblemática da olissipografia e da literatura portuguesa do início do século XVII. Escrita sobre a forma de diálogo entre um político, um soldado e um filósofo, apresenta uma reflexão profunda sobre a identidade lisboeta e portuguesa, contribuindo significativamente para a compreensão do contexto histórico e cultural de Lisboa no início do século XVII. SOBRE A OBRA Através das suas descrições detalhadas dos bairros, construções e atividades comerciais e culturais, Vasconcelos oferece um panorama vivido da vida lisboeta. O Sítio de Lisboa não só documenta a geografia física e humana da cidade, mas também promove uma reflexão sobre o impacto da globalização inicial nas sociedades europeias. Segundo a interpretação de José Sousa, autor da Biblioteca Histórica de Portugal, o político seria uma referência ao Conde da Castanheira, ministro do rei D. João III; o soldado a Martim Afonso de Sousa, ex-governador da Índia; e o filósofo ao bispo D. Jerónimo Osório. A obra de Vasconcelos reflete ainda a dualidade do período da União Ibérica (1580-1640), quando Portugal e Espanha estavam sob o domínio dos Filipes. Este período foi marcado por uma mistura de resistência e assimilação cultural, com Vasconcelos a abordar tanto os aspetos positivos como as tensões decorrentes da união política entre os dois países. Esta obra insere-se no rol de livros publicados durante o domínio filipino em Portugal, onde o enaltecimento de Lisboa visava atrair a corte espanhola para esta cidade, a fim de mais facilmente os portugueses poderem usufruir do cumprimento das promessas feitas por Filipe II nas Cortes de Tomar (1581). Lisboa, na época, era uma das cidades mais importantes da Europa, sendo um centro de comércio e cultura devido à sua localização estratégica e à prosperidade resultante das descobertas marítimas portuguesas. Durante a União Ibérica, quando Portugal e Espanha estavam sob o domínio dos Filipes, Lisboa enfrentou concorrência direta com Madrid, a capital espanhola. Esta união política e administrativa sob o domínio espanhol motivou alguns intelectuais e líderes portugueses a defender a ideia de que Lisboa deveria ser a capital do reino ibérico, em vez de Madrid. Vasconcelos apresenta uma série de argumentos em favor da mudança da capital da União Ibérica para Lisboa, destacando a importância estratégica e económica da cidade.     Rare first and only edition of a manual of military strategy by the Lisbon-born Mendes de Vasconcelos, head of the Portuguese Eastern troops and governor of Angola from 1617 to 1620. The illustrations show battle formations, featuring rectangular oders as well as circle and star formations. This is the only known work printed on the estate "do Mascote" in Alenquer, a small town some 50 km north of the capital, by the prominent Lisbon printer Vicente Alvarez, who was active between 1607 and 1626 and whose productions include an edition of the great epic poem "Os Lusíadas" in 1612.A few marginal annotations in Portuguese by a contemporary hand. Binding somewhat rubbed, interior showing occasional light brown stains, occasional minor water stains near the gutter and a few small marginal wormholes; several plates repaired.
