Soft Cover. Condition: Fine. 3rd Printing. 300 pp. Text in English. The papers in this volume, which is the first published work to deal exclusively with the Bleek and Lloy L.C. Lloyd in the field of Khoisan studies in southern Africa. Wilhelm Bleek and his sister-in-law Lucy Lloyd documented the language of the |Xam Bushmen by…taking down by dictation, in a phonetic script they had developed, more than 12,000 pages of folklore, accounts of daily life, and descriptions of rituals. Since the 1870s this ethnographic material has been used extensively by linguists, folklorists and archaeologists, and this book brings together researchers from these diverse but related fields. The first part of the book describes these two unusual personalities and their work, the second the research that has followed. It thus not only presents a detailed biographical account of the Bleek family's work with the /Xam informants, it also represents a contemporary position on the status of their ethnographic collection.
