Het begon allemaal toen Jan Louch, assistent-bibliothecaris bij de Douglas County Public Library in Carson Valley, Nevada, en een collega twee Scottish Fold-katten aanschafte om muizen weg te houden bij de nieuwe bibliotheek van de stad. Jan noemde de katten Baker en Taylor omdat de namen bij de rustige aard van de katten pasten, en omdat ze dagelijks met het boekendistributiebedrijf te maken had. Toen Jan instemde om de katten voor een poster te laten fotograferen, kon ze niet weten dat ze de meest beroemde bibliotheekkatten ter wereld zouden worden. Het was voor Jan al genoeg dat iedereen die de bibliotheek bezocht verliefd werd op de katten. Maar de poster werd een hit. Kinderen uit het hele land schreven brieven, die Jan namens Baker en Taylor beantwoordde, en fans reisden van ver om Baker aan de uitleenbalie en Taylor in zijn ongebruikelijke zittende Boeddha-houding te zien. Een charmante memoires, "The True Tails of Baker and Taylor" viert deze geweldige katten en de mensen - lezers, kattenliefhebbers en vele anderen - die samenkwamen rond hen.
