Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. Introduction by William Ewart Gladstone. 4to. xxix, 910pp. Illustrated with many engravings and with folding maps. Index. Blue cloth over beveled boards with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine. Extremities slightly rubbed, rear hinge cracked, fron…t hinge starting, all illustrations and maps in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Born in Scotland, but wishing to become an actor, Lorimer came to Louisville, KY, where he fell under the influence of the Rev. W.W. Everts, who turned him to Christianity. Educated in Georgetown College, Kentucky (1859), Lorimer was ordained into the Baptist ministry and served pastorates in Kentucky: Harrodsburg, Paducah, and Walnut Street Baptist Church, Louisville. He later served as pastor of Tremont Temple, Boston, for 21 years. Lorimer was the author of many widely read books on various religious subjects. In his Preface to the worked offered here, Lorimer wrote, "The intelligent public has a right to know what eminent scholars think on subjects closely interwoven with man's spiritual welfare, and to judge for itself how far recent researches may or may not invalidate cherished faiths." A progressive statement for his day, to be sure.
