Ugo Lombroso (1877-1952) war ein italienischer Physiologe und Holocaust-Überlebender jüdischer Herkunft, der sich mit Physiologie, insbesondere der Bauchspeicheldrüse, beschäftigte. Der junge Lombroso studierte an der Fakultät für Medizin und Chirurgie der Universität Turin zunächst bei Cesare Sacerdotti und dann bei Benedetto Morpurgo und schloss sein Studium 1903 ab. Im Jahr 1905 spezialisierte er sich am Institut für Experimentalphysiologie der Universität Rom unter der Leitung von Luigi Luciani und begann eine rasante Karriere. Im Jahr 1908 veröffentlichte er als Erster, dass ein lipolytischer Faktor der Bauchspeicheldrüse für die metabolische Oxidation von Lipiden verantwortlich ist. Dank seiner Entdeckungen wird Ugo Lombroso Professor für Physiologie in Messina (1919), Palermo (1923) und Genua (1935). Als Sozialist und Antifaschist ist er einer der wenigen italienischen Akademiker, die eine Mitgliedschaft in der faschistischen Partei stets abgelehnt haben Aufgrund der Rassengesetze von 1938 wird Lombroso aus allen beruflichen und akademischen Positionen in Italien Nach Kriegsende wurde Lombroso wieder auf den Lehrstuhl für Physiologie an der Universität Genua berufen und nahm seine Tätigkeit als Lehrer und Forscher bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1952 wieder voll auf.…
