Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Poor. A scholarly and critical Latin edition with extensive commentary and notes throughout. The Historiae is Curtius's only surviving book and was written probably in the reign of the Emperor Claudius around 50AD. There were many editions of this popular book. This appears to be a scarce one. 8vo. The illu…strated title page bears the place of publication, date, publisher, brief book title. The frontispiece is present, but not the textual title page. 12pp, 818pp, 2pp, 86pp (Freinsheim's essay), 44pp index (probably compiled by Freinsheim), 2pp ad for other books published by Petrus Vander Aa (Pieter Van der Aa). Freinsheim was a scholar of Roman historians and this and his work on Livy were his principal achievements. Half leather, probably late Victorian. The upper board is detached, leaving the spine, which is also cracked down the middle, as a flap. There is general wear. Internally the ancient pages are faring rather better. The frontispiece, showing the head of Alexander on four medallions is rather worn and torn with some loss around the lower spine-side coner. The other corner is torn across but not yet detached. The illustrated title is, though whole, also rather worn, with some abrasion across the top fore-corner. The text block, though it has been trimmed for the binding, is rather fresher for a book this age, with few blemishes. Apart from the frontispiece and illustrated title page there are 16 one page plates of attractively illustrated scenes of Alexander's military travels; 6 similar 2pp folding plates with dramatic artistic treatment; 1 folding map; 11 one page plates of other more schematic subjects and 2 illustrations in the text.
