Hardcover. Condition: Poor. 4th Edition. Fourth Edition 1795, 286pp. Front board detached and with loose front blank endpapers. Boards and spine generally worn and in indifferent condition. Period ownership name to title. Stain to inside front board and title page with a little staining to the first few pages and further faint staining at periodic stages through the book. The three plates are present with plates 2 & 3 a little worn to outer margins due to incorrect folding. Map correctly folded. Periodic light spotting. Despite the detached cover, this is a very readable copy of a scarce title. The fourth edition differs from the second edition in that the editor's supplement is expanded from four to ten chapters, the extra ones dealing with other aspects of coastal defence, military systems and art. The large folding map, showing the whole of the south coast, is titled 'A Military Sketch of the Line to Defend from Plymouth to Dover'. The second plan of defensive measures was engraved by William Faden. An interesting title when referenced against the political climate in France due to the French Revolution and the very real fears of invasion.(286pp). (Ua3).…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Second edition 1792, as stated on the title page. 226pp. Half-bound with red title label to spine. Marbled boards generally rubbed and worn to faces. Edges and corners scuffed. Front hinge cracking and a little tender: with careful handling it will be fine. Rear hinge a little worn but firm. Endpapers and title slightly mottled but consistent with age. Text very clean and bright. Map of southern England correctly folded, tight and with two small cuts along two folds near the lower margin where the edge is folded and a small hole at one fold junction. A tiny amount of colouring associated with troop positions. Folded plate of geographical landscapes with some ghosting and coloured according to troop positions (engraved by William Faden). Folded plate of troops and formations with a little ghosting and partly coloured. Title; Contents and Index (iii-vii); introduction (i-xix); text1-226; direction to book-binder; final advertisement leaf. The second edition differs from the later fourth edition (also available) in that the editors supplement is much reduced. Henry Lloyd was a career soldier who took part in a number of engagements around Europe as well as being involved in the Jacobite rebellion. As a soldier he acted as a surveyor for the French, most notably when surveying parts of the English coast. As an author he was widely respected for his knowledge of tactical warfare. 'Rhapsody' was published posthumously. It known to have been read by George Washington and General Patton and considered a key work in the development of 'modern' warfare. In this book, Lloyd deals with the problems that could be faced by an invading French army. This is not described in a generalised way but actually is very specific, e.g.: "near the seven mile stone a branch goes by Stocksbridge over some very hills and joins it to Basingstoke". An attractive and fascinating copy. More details available on request. (Ud3).…
