"The Last Bookmaker is a detailed suspense thriller that unveils the outer stress and inner workings of one of the biggest bookies in America: Louis Dante, a.k.a. Mr D. Sex and violence pervade the world of Mr. D, who considers himself a successful businessman. As the "end of the line" or the final "lay-off" man, he is, in effect, gambling himself while realizing the "big score." Not associated with organized crime or the Mob, Mr. D and his associates have, nevertheless, accumulated millions of dollars over twenty years, based solely on his work as a bookmaker. Divided into three sections, The Last Bookmaker begins in 1989 as the state and federal governments plan operations to shut down Mr. D's gambling empire and threaten him with incarceration or worse. The murder of a fellow bookie is also at stake. Mr. D and his partner and mentor, Paul, try to figure out the conspiracy surrounding the investigation, although they are stonewalled by a myriad of suspects: Mel the Tailor and "Handsome" John, two mid-level bookies who have vendettas against Mr. D; Shirley Hune McCutcheon, the gorgeous girlfriend; Margaret Dante, one of Mr. D's five ex-wives; Jimmy Bop and Shadow Creek, two black bookies looking to expand on their inner-city horizons; and the enformcement community itself -- the Vice cops, the state's attorney, and the federal prosecutor's office. Sect ion Two goes back to 1986 to disclose when much of Mr. D's current trouble may have begun. This section also flashes back to how Mr. D evolved into a bookmaker, and carefully reveals the informant who is being used to bring Mr. D down by an unscrupulous and overly ambitious U.S. prosecutor. While this action takes place, two drug dealers, who are also expelled outlaw bikers, are stalking Mr. D with the intention of robbing him to finance an impending drug deal. The resulting conclusion of Section Two combines lively character interaction with sudden and brutal action and violence. Section Three picks up in 1991 with Mr. D in federal prison, while the conspirators from earlier are plotting to take over his gambling empire." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
