First edition, 16mo (23.4 x 18.3 cm), publishers brown cloth with old Russian title to spine, rubbed with a few worming marks, two titles, the first illuminated, previous owner's inscription in Russian to the second title; pages browned with a few worming marks, some professionally restored, text in Russian. 219, [5] pp. A scarce anthology of poems by various authors with the common themes of Jewish life and fate, from the biblical times to the beginning of the 20th century. Cover illustration by El (Eliezer Lazar Markovich) Lissitzky (1890-1941), a prominent Jewish-Russian avant-garde artist, designer, photographer, teacher, typographer and architect. Lev (Leib) Borisovich Yaffe (1876-1948) was a Russian-Jewish poet, translator and newspaper editor. In the years 1917-1919 he was the chief editor of the Moscow-based Jewish publishing house 'Safrut' (translates as 'Literature' from Hebrew). Yaffe translated from original Hebrew to Russian and published the works of Judah Leib Gordon, Isaac Leib Peretz, Hayim Nahman Bialik, Shaul Tchernichovsky and others. Yaffe was also active in the Zionist movement and published many articles on the subject. MoMA 161.2001.…

A celebratory overview of Western modernist architecture, with detailed analysis of the works of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Richard Neutra, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Le Corbusier, Bruno Taut, and Ernst May, among others. The volume is illustrated with numerous photographs of architectural plans as well as finished constructions. The author, architectural and art historian David Arkin (1899-1957) published this work at a critical moment, when the official Soviet policy was starting to turn away from Western and early modernist examples. A professor at the Moscow Architectural Institute, he was accused of "cosmopolitanism" for publishing this work, though he managed to avoid deportation. A significant issue of this landmark Soviet art magazine, issued from 1930 to 1941 to celebrate the achievements of the first two Five Year Plans and (through various foreign-language editions) to propagandize the stark contrast between the vibrant Soviet economy during this period and the stagnation of Western economies under capitalism. "All the visual strategies of the propaganda photobooks, designed by Lissitsky, Rodchenko and others.were developed in USSR in Construction, one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century" (Parr-Badger, The Photobook, I:148). The present issue is entirely devoted to Dnieprostroi, the massive hydro-electric power station located in Zaporizhia, Ukraine. Planned and built by the Communists to stimulate Soviet industrialization, the dam was central to Lenin's slogan "Communism is Soviet power plus the electrification of the whole country." A key issue, marking the first design project El Lissitzky would carry out for the magazine. The highlight of the issue is the large 8-panel fold-out centerfold, featuring photomontages, panoramic views of the dam, and portraits of various engineers, designers, and workers.…
