[London: Printed by Brian & Payne, c.1828-1829]. 10" x 7" (17.8 x 12.1 cm) line engraving (measured to edges of sheet), publication information removed. Light toning, faint spotting and dampstaining to margins. $150. * O'Connell [1775-1847] was the political leader of Ireland's Roman Catholic majority during the first half of the 19th century. Known as "The Liberator," his efforts secured the final installment of Catholic emancipation in 1829. He was elected twice to the Parliament of the United Kingdom after emancipation. He also served as Lord Mayor of Dublin. This portrait was probably engraved by John Frederick Lewis. Famous for his paintings of Orientalist scenes, he produced a number of engravings at the beginning of his career. The image of O'Connell is accompanied by symbols of truth, justice and prosperity.
