The Stamp Specialist is the title of a series of books on philatelic research written and edited for the advanced collector of postage stamps. The books were published by H. L. Lindquist, 2 West 46 Street, New York City. Twenty books were issued between 1939 and 1948. Early books were paper bound, but the majority was hard-bound and each later book was usually popularly identified by the color of its hard cover. Each book contains six or more studies of research by eminent philatelic experts, each related to a particular detailed philatelic subject. Harry Lemuel Lindquist (August 15, 1884 January 16, 1978) was an editor and publisher specializing in the publication of philatelic literature during the early 20th century. Lindquist was responsible, during the period 19391948, for editing and publishing a series of books containing detailed philatelic research by various writers. The series was entitled "The Stamp Specialist" and most of the books in the series are identified by the color of their cover. Lindquist founded and became president of the National Federation of Stamp Clubs which grew to 600 clubs. He also served as a member of the Postmaster General's Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, serving in that position 1957 to 1961. He received the Benjamin Franklin Award for Distinguished and Outstanding Public Service, awarded by the United States Post Office. Number 4 (1940): Paper. Norman Serphos was the former president of the Scott Stamp & Coin Company, Inc., one of the oldest philatelic concerns in the country. Mr. Serphos started collecting stamps as a child. His particular hobby was research in aviation in association with the mails, and he was believed to have assembled more philatelic pieces on the subject than any other American collector. His collections won many prizes over the years. In 1923, he won a blue ribbon for his collection of Charles A. Lindbergh covers and autographs. The following year he broke the record for winning blue ribbons at the National Stamp Exhibition at Radio City. At the International Philatelic Exhibition at Grand Central Palace in New York in 1936, he won the gold and silver medals for the Airpost Collection Of the World, an accumulation of the first airmail flight covers to major cities around the world. Mr. Serphos became president of the 110 year old Scott Stamp & Coin Company in 1936 and headed the concern for more than 20 years. He was active as a consultant and appraiser. He was president of the American Stamp Dealers Association in 194445 and was a member of the Collectors Club of. New York, the.
