An insightful anonymous contemporary review in the Boston Transcript notes: "The papers are primarily the work of a great lawyer. His work is considered to have a tremendous effect upon not only the body of law already assimilated and codified but also upon the law which is being called into being in response in response to the modern development of society, particularly as regards the industrial situation."
