No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Manuscript handwritten in black ink on beige paper and signed by Lewis Cass Granger. Datelined January 16, 1838 in Canonsburg, PA. 8" x 10." Four pages. Letter and handwriting are very clean and intact. Some splitting at the center horizontal fold line but text is still legible. This speech was given by Lewis Cass Granger at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, PA to students and citizens. Granger graduated from Jefferson College that same year in 1838. Jefferson College merged with Washington College to become Washington and Jefferson (W & J) College in 1865. W & J is still located at Washington College's original location in Washington, PA, and is open to this day as a private liberal arts college. Lewis Cass Granger (1819-1890) was an American lawyer, minister, and politician. Originally from Ohio, he and his family came to California by wagon train in 1850. He settled in Los Angeles and served as county attorney, city councilman, and city attorney between 1851 and 1856. In 1857, Granger moved to Oroville. He represented that area as an assemblyman in the state legislature for two sessions, 1883-1884 and 1887. The Letters of Lewis Granger was published by the Huntington Library in 1959. This speech has a philosophical bent and compares American government with other forms of government in Europe. Granger talks about principles valued in the United States, such as happiness and freedom, and how government is necessary but must be effectively and carefully constructed so as to uphold those principles. No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Three autograph letters signed and handwritten and signed by Lewis Cass Granger. One of the letters and the manuscript are on printed stationery. 1870s-1884. Ventura, Oroville, and Sacramento, California. Eleven pages total. Letter size ranges between 4 3/4" x 8" and 8 1/4" x 10 3/4." Letters and handwriting are very clean and intact. Some pages split in half but enclosed in sheet protectors. (From two manuscripts in this letter collection that are written on printed stationery, it can be inferred Granger may have also lived/worked in Ventura, CA in the 1870s, although this history is not provided in biographical sources on Granger's life.) This collection, briefly described, is as follows with each letter or manuscript demarcated by date: 1874, Ventura, two pages. To his wife, Isabella, in Oroville. Granger writes that he would like her to move to Ventura to be with him. He is also upset about a relationship that a family member or friend named Belle has entered into. 1883, Oroville, four pages. To his daughter, Mrs. Louisa T. G. Hays, in Rheatown, TN. Granger writes about the social and business life in and around Oroville and Butte County, mentioning that while California has great wealth, that same wealth can also corrupt people. 1884, Sacramento, four pages. To his daughter, Louisa. Written from the Assembly Chambers in Sacramento, Granger tells of how he likes his work. Granger says he knows enough people around the capitol that he could get his son-in-law, David, a job if he and Louisa moved back to California. 187?, "Marcha de Esparto." Written on stationery: "L. C. Granger, Attorney at Law. San Buenaventura, CA." Copied song in Spanish. One page. Signed by Author(s).
