Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning and slightly bumped corners. Covers are very clean and intact but have browning, slight offsetting, slightly bumped corners, and a few almost imperceptible wrinkles. A Near Fine copy. A collection of printed commentary by five Spanish politicians and leading intellectuals of the 1930s who give their thoughts and opinions about the ongoing Spanish Civil War. The five figures are Niceto Alcala-Zamora (1877-1949), who served as Prime Minister of Spain in 1931 and President of Spain from 1931-1936; Alejandro Lerroux (1864-1949), a leader of the Radical Republican Party who served as the Prime Minister of Spain from 1933-1935; Gregorio Maranon (1887-1960), a physician, scientist, philosopher, and historian; Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936), writer and intellectual; and Pio Baroja y Nessi (1872-1956), another writer and intellectual. While each of the men are generally associated with the political left in Spain, their comments documented at this time express a disapproval toward both the left and right, albeit with a slight preference for the right. Alcala-Zamora speaks about the tumultuous and violent upheaval of the Second Spanish Republic; the partisan in-fighting within the Popular Front; his vehement criticism of his successor Manuel Azana; and how he was removed from office (including discussion of the Spanish parliament, Cortes). Lerroux is opposed to the ongoing war but claims the far-right Nationalist regime is bringing order to the far-left government that was in power. Maranon expresses his heartbreak and sense of hopelessness in response to the ongoing war. He decries the Spanish regimes of both the left and right. However, similar to Lerroux, Maranon appears to depict the Nationalist regime as the lesser of two evils. Unamuno defends his name and says he has not betrayed the people. He acknowledges that he was once a champion of Marxism and its ideologies, but he contends that Marxism only succeeded in dividing the country. Similar to the other speakers, Unamuno had once been fully supportive of the leftist movement but has become disillusioned with its apparent corruption. Baroja takes a pointedly independent stance. He discusses the "Generation of '98," a group of noted Spanish philosophers and intellectuals. Baroja expresses contempt for both the left and right in Spain. Overall, the each of the five men express grief and devastation in reaction to the Spanish Civil War and have an ambivalence toward both the far-left and far-right movements in Spain but with perhaps greater disillusionment toward the left.…
