The work surveys early lighting devices, lamps, candles, rushlights, wick-supported lamps, oil and kerosene lighting, and related forms, making it useful not only as a history of technology but also as a reference for collectors of antique lamps, lighting devices, decorative arts, and early household objects. First Edition, 1958, as explicitly stated on the copyright page. Printed in Japan by the Obun Printing Company, Tokyo. Condition: Very Good in Fair original dust jacket. Black cloth hardcover appears sound and well preserved with light expected shelf wear. Interior is generally clean with mild age toning. Front pastedown bears an attractive pictorial ex libris bookplate of Ralph M. Stall. Original glossy black and red dust jacket is substantially worn but largely retained. Jacket shows considerable rubbing, scratching and surface wear; chipping and small losses along the edges and corners; wear and loss at the spine extremities; and a significant irregular loss along the upper edge of the rear panel. Rear jacket also shows general soiling and handling wear. Despite the defects, the front design remains bright and presentable. Please refer closely to photographs for condition. A useful first-edition reference for collectors and researchers interested in antique lighting, early American household technology, material culture, decorative arts, lamps, candlesticks, and the history of domestic interiors.
