Französisch an Monsieur Cusins, dem er anbietet, einen Auftrag für Anton Rubinstein zu übernehmen, da er wenige Tage später nach Rußland reisen werde. - Auer hatte 1868 in London mit Anton Rubinstein gespielt. Von diesem empfohlen trat er die Nachfolge von Wieniawski am Petersburger Konservatorium an, wo er von 1868-1917 lehrte. Zu seinen Schülern zählen u. a. Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, Nathan Milstein u. a. Tschaikowski widmete ihm sein Violinkonzert, welches Auer anfänglich für unspielbar hielt, sowie seine Serenade melancholique op. 26 b-moll von 1875. Als Violinist am Zarenhof hatte er gleichzeitig einen bedeutenden Einfluss auf das russische Musikleben am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts.
