Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good +. 1st Sphere Books Edition. Ono, Yoko. Grapefruit. London: Sphere Books Limited, 1971. 1st Sphere Books Edition. SIGNED BY BOTH YOKO ONO AND JOHN LENNON ON THE FFEP; a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA (Cert. No. AR000397) certifying the authenticity of the two signatures will accompany the book. Square 24mo - 5-1/8" x 5-1/16".Perfect-bound color pictorial stiff paper wrappers with a memorable cover design to both front and rear wrappers conflating the book's title with Yoko Ono's 1966 film "Bottoms" which was composed exclusively of naked human bottoms as they walked on a concealed treadmill; titles printed in black and white to spine; sun-fading to spine, unevenly so to front wrapper, minor creasing to lower fore edge corner of front wrapper and the slightest touches of rubbing to the spine corners for what is a lovely copy of the book. [280] pp., plus [4] pp. "Other Works by Yoko Ono." In the 1960s, Yoko Ono participated as a key artist in the development of Conceptual and Performance art. Working both independently and collaboratively, Ono produced a number of texts, performances, films and musical compositions that looked to push the boundaries of modern art. In 1964, within the context of her work as a performance artist, Ono produced the artists' book, Grapefruit. Originally published in a limited edition of 500 copies in Tokyo, it contained 150 instruction pieces and poems. Intimately tied to her performance work, these short pieces spotlighted Ono's singular creativity and approach to art. An example of one of Ono's instruction pieces from Grapefruit: LAUNDRY PIECE " In keeping this instruction, you may lose all your underwears. I: Record the time when you noticed that you have a worry. Do not write down what the worry was. II: Throw the record into a washing machine together with your next laundry. III: When the laundry is done, take out the record. Read it aloud, and eat it. " A second edition of Grapefruit was published in 1970 by Peter Owen Ltd. in London. This edition included an introduction by John Lennon, and contained 80 more instruction pieces. The Sphere edition, the third edition overall, was published a year later in 1971; age-tanned pages but otherwise in fine condition internally. The overall condition of the book is VERY GOOD +. THE UNCOMMON SPHERE EDITION IN UNCOMMONLY GOOD CONDITION; SIGNED BY BOTH ONO AND LENNON. Note: On July 15 and 16, 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono promoted the launch of the Sphere edition of Ono's Grapefruit by signing copies of the book at Selfridges department store and the Claude Gill bookshop in London. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Slightest toning to spine ends, else fine. Light dust soiling to jacket, unobtrusive 0.75 inch tear to jacket's front panel. Association copy. Warmly inscribed "to Grace. . . sign posters on the streets should be changed, for instance Go - Stop sign should be changed to Go - FLY, Stop - DREAM, Love, Yoko". Grace Glueck (1926 - 2022), a former art critic at the New York Times, was an early champion of avant-garde and feminist art. In her 1971 review of Yoko Ono's exhibition "Remembering the Future" at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY, Glueck led off with the question, "Is Syracuse ready for Yoko Ono and John Lennon?". David Ross, a museum employee, recalled in a 2005 interview "That evening the doors to the Everson were broken down because people had heard there'd be a secret Beatles concert. . .the entire museum was filled with people furious that it had been canceled, and we were afraid they'd trash the place. (Poet Allen) Ginsberg calmed them down". Some 6,000 people visited the museum show on opening day. Signed by Author(s).…

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst Sphere edition of Ono's seminal piece of conceptual art. 12mo, original illustrated wrappers. Signed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the front free endpaper. The uncommon Sphere edition of Ono's Grapefruit integrates the 'cheeky' subject matter of her 1966 short film Bottoms. Rare and highly sought-after signed by both Ono and Lennon. First published in 1964, Yoko Ono's Grapefruit reads as a set of instructions through which the work of art is completed-either literally or in the imagination of the viewer participant. "Grapefruit is one of the monuments of conceptual art of the early 1960s. [Yoko] has a lyrical, poetic dimension that sets her apart from the other conceptual artists. Her approach to art was only made acceptable when white men like Kosuth and Weiner came in and did virtually the same thing as Yoko, but made them respectable and collectible" (David Bourdon). Ono would enact many of the book's scenarios as performance pieces throughout her career, which formed the basis for her art exhibitions, including the highly publicized retrospective exhibition, This Is Not Here in 1971 at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York, that was nearly closed when it was besieged by excited Beatles fans, who broke several of the art pieces.…
