Er nutzte seine technischen Kenntnisse als Architekt und war ein geschätzter Prediger und fruchtbarer Autor von rund 1500 Kantaten. Der Gegensatz von orthodoxer Gläubigkeit und abweichlerischer Frömmigkeit in Verbindung mit einer Neigung zu staatserhaltender Loyalität, praktischem Erwerbssinn und schöngeistigen Neigungen prägte L.s Intellekt ebenso wie sein Empfinden. L. war das 17. Kind seiner Mutter; außer ihm überlebten nur vier Geschwister die ersten Lebensjahre. Von Geburt an schwächlich, seit frühesten Kindertagen bucklig, war der physisch Zurückgebliebene nicht nur für körperliche Arbeiten untauglich, sondern wählte überdies die in der Familie ungewöhnliche Laufbahn eines Universitätsprofessors. In der Residenz des Fürstentums Hessen-Darmstadt, wohin das geistliche Amt 1745 die Familie geführt hatte, besuchte L. 1752-61 das 'Pädagogium'. 1763 wurde er als 'Mathematum et Physices Studiosus', mit einem landgräflichen Stipendium ausgestattet, an der Univ. Göttingen immatrikuliert. Die Tätigkeit als Hofmeister englischer Studenten wurde für seine Berufung nach Göttingen entscheidend: 1770 von einem Zögling nach England eingeladen, lernte er König Georg III. kennen und wurde durch dessen Intervention zum a.o.Prof., 1775 zum Ordinarius in Göttingen ernannt. Zuvor schickte ihn königliche Ordre 1772/73 nach Hannover, Osnabrück und Stade zur astronomischen Bestimmung dieser Orte. Hernach verbrachte L. anderthalb Jahre in England. Dieser Aufenthalt, der ihn mit allen Licht- und Schattenseiten des Alltags, der Wissenschaft und Kultur konfrontierte, sollte von nachhaltiger Bedeutung für sein ganzes Leben, Denken und Werk werden.
