Original publishers sewn paperback, pictorial frontcover, 8vo: 230pp., 27 figs/illustrations, bibliography, list illustrations, index. Very fine copy. In de Oudheid was het schip met drie rijen roeiers boven elkaar [trireme] eeuwenlang een algemeen gebruikt schip, maar ondertussen werd er geëxperimenteerd met meer rijen roeiers…[multireme]. Over deze grote schepen werd wel GEschreven, maar BEschreven werden ze niet. In de Renaissance begon de queeste naar het geheim van de multireme, deze nog steeds tot de verbeelding sprekende duizendpoten van de zee. Tussen 1500 en 1850 hebben drommen geleerden en minder geleerden theorieën ontwikkeld over de multiremen. Van de wildernis van deze theorieën is nog nooit een gedetailleerd overzicht gegeven. Lehmann probeert het te doen met dit boek.
