Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Francis Bacon,Edward Burra, Massimo Campigli, Keith Vaughan, Wyndham Lewis, Robert Colquhoun, Robert McBryde (illustrator). 1st Edition. Penguin New Writing No. 38 with Early Painting by Francis Bacon. Also Contains Work by Wyndham Lewis, Saul Bellow, Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch, 1949 Vintage Paperback. This is "The Penguin New Writing", No. 38, published in 1949. It's a great issue with selections from contemporary literary lions, and luminaries from the world of Art. Of special interest in this issue is a reproduction of an early painting by Francis Bacon, (reproduced in black-and-white), included in the "Paintings from Recent Exhibitions" section. The painting titled "Head" is a very early effort by Bacon, possibly the first in the series of "Heads", and one sees his distinctive style coalescing in this unsettling picture. It is significant as a marker in Bacon's career. (See picture provided). This inclusion is what elevates the book's value. Other artists whose works are depicted are Edward Burra, Massimo Campigli, Keith Vaughan, Wyndham Lewis, Robert Colquhoun, and Robert McBryde. In the pictorial section there are also photographic stills from stage productions of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon, including plays produced by Anthony Quayle and John Gielgud. there are also costume designs shown by James Bailey and Edward Carrick. This issue is also significant for its inclusions from the literary front : there are selections from Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch and Saul Bellow, as well as many others. There was much more to Edward Lear than the limericks, funny verses and and drawings for which is best known. These are sensitively analyzed in this book, bringing out not only their gaiety but also the melancholy which afflicted Lear from time to time. He was in fact a considerable artist, first making his name as an illustrator of birds (considered by some to be the equal of Audubon) and of other animals. His eye-sight was, however, too weak for him to do such detailed work for long, and he then took to landscape painting. Ref MMM 5.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book teaches harmony and is a suitable text for the study of this subject, with illustrative examples and a definite assignment of lessons. It aims to furnish a theoretical framework along with practical exercises designed to enable music students to continue developing their work by researching the works of the masters. Emphasis is laid on the value of being able to play, in any key, a large number of cadence formulae. The author begins by providing basic definitions and scales, then delves into triads in major and minor keys, as well as both major and minor keys. The book covers inversions of triads, chords of the sixth, six-four chords, the chords of the dominant seventh, secondary triads, the sequence, and the supertonic seventh chord. Through the detailed study of these elements, the book imparts not only theoretical knowledge but also the skills to apply this knowledge to practical musical composition. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
