It was not always so easy. For more than forty years after the advent of the moving picture, equipment and production techniques remained ess…entially the same, except for the introduction of sound. (Otherwise, there was little difference between, say, a Cecil B. DeMille film of the 1920's and a John Huston film of the 1950's.) Production was rooted to the Hollywood studio; the equipment was heavy and immobile and required dozens of technicians. To break into film meant climbing up a long ladder of seniority. In the 1960's everything changed. Equipment became lighter and flexible. Production broke free of the studio and the bankers and moved to far-flung locations; production costs dropped. Most important, small efficient cameras of all sizes-eight, sixteen, and thirty-five millimeter-became available at relatively low cost. In short, the film medium became accessible. Making Movies is designed to help fledgling moviemakers of all ages. In easily understood language, it explains the complete production process, broken down into manageable steps, with the theory and practice of each step explained. Everything is here. from concept to storyboard, from preparation for production (including budgeting) to direction, cinematography, sound recording, editing, and postproduction sound. It describes how distribution works and discusses careers in filmmaking and how to achieve one. Over 75 illustrations enhance the text. A color insert illustrates innovations in color cinematography. Each chapter has been written in consultation with experts, and technical points are reinforced by excerpts from successful scripts and interviews with leading directors. Bobker owns and operates Vision Associates, a film company, in New York City. He is also a lecturer in the Department of Television, Motion Pictures and Radio at New York University. As a working filmmaker, he has written, produced, and directed over 300 education, documentary, and travel films, and has won more than 200 awards, both here and abroad, including three Academy Award nominations. The book is slightly warped and may have been water-damaged, but there are no water stains. The cloth cover is faded at the top front and rear.
