L'ultima cerchia delle Mura di Lucca, così come oggi la vediamo, fu realizzata con uno sforzo economico notevole dal piccolo Stato lucchese nel corso di 137 anni, da quando la città-stato si trovò circondata da irrequieti vicini con il timore di essere sopraffatta dai pote…nti d'Europa. Il formidabile sistema difensivo fu uno degli elementi fondamentali per tutelare l'indipendenza della città durata 430 anni, dal 1369 al 1799. Mai coinvolte in eventi bellici, fulcro del sistema di sicurezza territoriale, garantirono pace e tranquillità alla Repubblica fino all'arrivo delle truppe di Napoleone. Le Mura salvarono la città dalla furia delle acque del Serchio nell'alluvione del 18 novembre 1812 quando le porte furono chiuse e sigillate con sacchi di sabbia e la città restò per giorni un'isola in mezzo alle acque. Cessata la funzione militare le fortificazioni restarono un grande parco urbano sopraelevato che durante i governi di Elisa Bonaparte e Maria Luisa di Borbone fu progressivamente sistemato a pubblico passeggio. Con l'unità d'Italia il parco delle Mura urbane fu incamerato dal demanio militare del nuovo Regno. Per evitare lottizzazioni, alienazioni, speculazioni edilizie e quindi la distruzione del monumento, il Comune di Lucca le riacquistò integralmente fra il 1864 e il 1870 con una spesa di 112.350 lire, diversamente dalla maggioranza delle città italiane dove le antiche fortificazioni sono andate distrutte. Un libro interamente dedicato al monumento simbolo di Lucca, le Mura rinascimentali. Storia, personaggi, curiosità, architettura e fotografie di quella che sicuramente una delle cerchie murarie meglio conservate al mondo. Libro.
