Add to basketFirst edition, signed on the front free endpaper by Lawrence's machine-gunner, Tom Beaumont, and inscribed by Henry Williamson, Lawrence's close friend: "T. E. was/is the finest man I've known". It is additionally signed by three academics, all of whom contributed to this book, Knightley as its co-editor. Tom Beaumont, listed in Appendix 1 of Seven Pillars of Wisdom as a member of the Hejaz Armoured Car Company, served with Lawrence in the Arab Revolt as his No. 1 Vickers machine gunner. He accompanied Lawrence on railway demolition operations, the attack on Tel El Shahm station, and the liberation of Damascus before being returned to Britain with malaria. The two remained friends, exchanging letters until Lawrence crashed into a tree on his motorcycle in 1935. In 1983, Beaumont planted a new tree at that site to commemorate his death. Henry Williamson (1895-1977) sent a proof copy of Tarka the Otter to Lawrence in Karachi in 1928. Lawrence's response praised Williamson's work and offered suggestions for its improvement. From there a friendship blossomed, and Lawrence was on the way to post a letter to Williamson when he died. The remaining signatures are of Arabella Rivington (1914-1972), Phillip Knightley (1929-2016), and Dr Lilith Friedman (1908-1998). All three researched Lawrence and contributed to this volume. Dr Friedman was a particularly notable researcher of Lawrence and aided Jeremy Wilson in writing his 1989 authorized biography. Wilson wrote "this book would not have been completed, even now, without the years of work contributed by Dr Lilith Friedman. She has patiently and painstakingly followed up thousands of queries and has remained cheerful even when the search proved fruitless" (p. 1,157). This copy is the first impression, with the uncorrected sentence "Only one hymn was sung, Lawrence's favourite, 'Jesu, Lover of my Soul'" on page 275. O'Brien E302. Octavo. With 16 half-tone photographic plates, maps in text. Original black boards, spine lettered in blue. With pictorial dust jacket. Cloth and contents fresh; jacket unclipped, some toning, one small closed tear to front panel repaired, a few stains to verso: a fine copy in very good jacket.
