Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. Contemporary sheep with double gilt rulings to spine. Small book - 16mo, 109pp - that's tight, square and relatively sharp-cornered given the age and use. Endpapers somewhat browned. 1 ad at the very end - "Just Published, and now selling by the printer." Most of the printin…gs of this book were printed in England - this is a rare American edition by the son of a Revolutionary War officer, George Jerry Osborne (1761-1800). Osborne published only briefly from Newburyport in Massachusetts and had an important newspaper in nearby Portsmouth, NH. According to McNaughton's Bookshop in Edinburgh, the ESTC locates only one copy of this rare book in the UK, at the BL, plus 5 places in the United States: AAS, Boston Public, Buffalo & Erie County Public, Massachusetts Historical Society, and the Library of Congress. Quite rare and in Good to Very Good condition.

Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. In good condition. Signed binding by R.M. Hunt bound nicely in green leather. Boards show typical wear with light scuffing, rounding of corners. Joints are slightly dry. Green end papers are free of marginalia. Front gutter tender. Text evenly toned with sporadic moderate foxing. Binding ti…ght and intact. Please see photos. Lovely binding, well-illustrated. Johann Kaspar Lavater was a Swiss poet, writer, philosopher, physiognomist and theologian. He introduced the idea that physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types. Lavater is attributed with catalysing a golden age for silhouettes through this work in physiognomy. According to him, the character of a person could be elucidated through examining their lines of countenance . The most accurate of readings were facilitated by the tracing of a profile outline portrait. This contour line could be filled with black or cut from the white paper and placed over a black backing. More often, the silhouette was simply cut from black paper. In the chapter On Shades , Lavater wrote, What can less the image of a living man be than a shade? Yet how full of speech! Little gold, but the purest." COLH1841DKLZ-variant.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 3rd Edition. Printed by W. Sleater, Dame-Street, and P. Byrne, Grafton Street. Pages: vi, 222. Frontispiece. 165x100mm. Contemporary full tree calf, spine ruled gilt with gilt lettered red title label. This is one of two printings of this work which were issued in Dublin in 1790. Both are describ…ed as the 'Third Edition' and that 'Printed by and for Chamberlaine and Rice, No. 5 College-Green' does not appear to have had a frontispiece. The stipple engraved frontispiece in this copy is signed 'P. Maguire, Sculpt.' and is an almost exact copy of the William Blake engraved frontispiece of the London 1789 edition, thus representing what is probably an unauthorized copy of Blake's engraving, which itself was from a design by Fuseli. Patrick Maguire was active as an engraver in Dublin in the years 1783 to 1820. Lower front corner of binding rubbed with lower front hinge tender but holding well. Aphorism no. 199 has been highlighted in contemporary pen, with shadows of removed pencil marks in the page margins. Overall a very attractive copy of this scarce Dublin printing with a particularly clean example of the important frontispiece which is missing from many copies. Henry Fuseli - William Blake - Patrick Maguire (illustrator).
