paperback. Condition: Very Good in Wrappers. No Jacket. First Edition. Amherst. 1976. Fana Publishing. 1st Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. Paperback Original. 57 pages. paperback. Cover etching by Tahira Lateef, keywords: African American Literature America. DESCRIPTION - 'Yusef Lateef has been making great music for more than three decades. I have had the privilege of hearing his music for about half of that time span, and it has affected me. I believe he is one of the most original composers and certainly one of the most distinctive instrumentalists this or any other country has produced. I hope it isn't too long until the general public discovers what musicians have known and acknowledged for man years: Yusef Lateef is a giant. It is not surprising to discover that Yusef's prose has many of the same qualities as his music: originality. Strength, depth, imagination, versatility, love, tranquility, color, spirituality, communication. He challenges and stimulates; he paints vivid and often visceral pictures; he preaches and teaches when he feels the situation demands it. He composes tone poems with words, often fading in and out on a scene from life as a piece of music might do on a recording or in live performance. Yusef Lateef is one of our most skilled and devoted practitioners of that art form known as The Blues. Now he has translated The Blues from music onto the printed page. Open your eyes and hear!' - Michael O'Daniel. inventory #25069.

Signed attractively on the front cover by Lateef in black marker pen, "Dear Sister Sylvia, in Peace, Bro. Yusef Lateef"; it is tempting to speculate that this may be Sylvia Shemwell (1941-2010), singer with The Sweet Inspirations - the vocal group who most famously backed Elvis - but who also appeared on the multi-instrumentalist's 1968 Atlantic album The Blue Yusef Lateef. This is a double album reissue of selections from three of Lateef's Savoy albums from 1957: Jazz Mood, Jazz for the Thinker, and Stable Mates. Each date featured Curtis Fuller (trombone), Hugh Lawson (piano), Ernie Farrow (bass), Louis Hayes (drums), and Doug Watkins (finger cymbals and percussion), although, these being Yusef Lateef dates, Farrow doubles on "rabat" (presumably the lute-like rabab that originated in Afghanistan), while the leader deploys not just tenor and flute but the "argol" (or arghul, an ancient Middle Eastern single-reed double-pipe flute). Lateef "adopted a Muslim name in response to his growing and eventually life-long infatuation with the musics of the Levant and Asia" (Penguin Guide). This is an attractively produced gatefold album, with liner notes by Michael Cuscuna and colour artwork by Joyce Arons. 2 12-inch vinyl LPs (Savoy SJL 2205), new plain paper sleeves (original sleeves also present), original album cover. A little shelf wear, slight soiling from album show-through, touch of creasing to corners; a few light abrasions to discs but overall very good.

Rare promotional pressing, with white labels, attractively inscribed inside the gatefold by Lateef, "Peace be unto you Dear Bro, George Logan, Sincerely Bro, Yusef Lateef"; the recipient is almost certainly the civil rights activist of the same name, an interview with whom can be heard on the website for the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History, University of Kentucky Libraries. Something of a sleeper in the Lateef catalogue, this finds the great multi-instrumentalist accompanied by New Zealander Mike Nock (piano), Reggie Workman (bass), and James Black (drums); recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 24 February 1965. The title track is "based on a twelve-toned technique of the composer's own invention" (liner notes), and across the album Lateef employs an array of instruments, some of his own devising, including the oboe, a specialty, and the Taiwanese flute. This is a stylishly-produced album, photography by the great Chuck Stewart. Discogs website; jazzdisco website. 12-inch vinyl LP (Impulse! A-84), new plain white inner sleeve (original inner also preserved), original gatefold album cover. Light shelfwear to cover but very good, original inner sleeve rather creased; a few light scratches and abrasions to disc.
