Add to basketSigned attractively on the front cover by Lateef in black marker pen, "Dear Sister Sylvia, in Peace, Bro. Yusef Lateef"; it is tempting to speculate that this may be Sylvia Shemwell (1941-2010), singer with The Sweet Inspirations - the vocal group who most famously backed Elvis - but who also appeared on the multi-instrumentalist's 1968 Atlantic album The Blue Yusef Lateef. This is a double album reissue of selections from three of Lateef's Savoy albums from 1957: Jazz Mood, Jazz for the Thinker, and Stable Mates. Each date featured Curtis Fuller (trombone), Hugh Lawson (piano), Ernie Farrow (bass), Louis Hayes (drums), and Doug Watkins (finger cymbals and percussion), although, these being Yusef Lateef dates, Farrow doubles on "rabat" (presumably the lute-like rabab that originated in Afghanistan), while the leader deploys not just tenor and flute but the "argol" (or arghul, an ancient Middle Eastern single-reed double-pipe flute). Lateef "adopted a Muslim name in response to his growing and eventually life-long infatuation with the musics of the Levant and Asia" (Penguin Guide). This is an attractively produced gatefold album, with liner notes by Michael Cuscuna and colour artwork by Joyce Arons. 2 12-inch vinyl LPs (Savoy SJL 2205), new plain paper sleeves (original sleeves also present), original album cover. A little shelf wear, slight soiling from album show-through, touch of creasing to corners; a few light abrasions to discs but overall very good.
