In the publisher's suppressed first state jacket, $17.50 on the front flap, "10/71" date code on rear flap, light shelf wear, bright illustrations, a near fine example. The first state jacket, designed by Larry Rivers, was distributed to subscribers and advance reviewers. It was suppressed because of the depiction of a nude male on the front cover and was replaced with a typographic jacket. The Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara, published posthumously, shared the 1972 National Book Award for Poetry. The twenty-two year old author's first book published by a mainstream press, which excitedly mentions in his author bio on rear flap the recently completed "remarkable and long-awaited Basketball Diaries." Completed or not, that memoir was not published until 1978, by the Tombouctou Press.
