Birds of the Northern Forest is an introduction to some of the birds that live in the great North American evergreen forests. Published in 1966, it is a collection of brief profiles and magnificent portraits of 56 of the region?s most characteristic birds. Each plate is preceded by a written page or text which in turn is preceded by drawings that were reproduced from the artist?s preliminary sketches. James Fenwick Lansdowne (1937 ? 2008) was a self-taught Canadian wildlife artist. Lansdowne's creative process involved observation from life and from preserved specimens. His detailed watercolors of birds have frequently been compared with the work of John James Audubon ? they often feature a specific species against a largely white background ? but his subjects tend to display a greater lifelike quality and more natural postures than Audubon's. His work is in such public collections as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and in the collection of the Princess Royal and Duke of Edinburgh.

Corners slightly bumped and edges and top/bottom of spine a bit scuffed. Blue endpapers. Signed by illustrator and author on title page (please note that the authenticity of the signatures cannot be verified). Some foxing to prelims and to last few pages. Tightly bound. Text is unmarked; a little tanning along the edges of the pages. Beautiful colour and black and white illustrations. Illustrated dustjacket showing pine grosbeaks. It is faded along the top and spine. Two tears along the bottom and chips along the top and folds. Creases on the front. Tanned on the inner edges. Slightest of rubbing to the corners of the boards. Fresh and clean. Original dust wrapper not price clipped, with slight sunning to the spine of the wrapper. A few tears of no more than 2.5 cm from the edges of the wrapper with a little associated creasing. Shelf wear to the wrapper edges. A near fine copy.
