Saunders has signed with his first initials and last name on several of the first leaves. L'Engle has also signed her name under Saunders, "and his descendant, Madeleine L'Engle C. Franklin." Saunders served several positions for the state of North Carolina including Superior Court Judge, Attorney General, U. S. House of Representatives, and state senator. He was also the U.
