Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Acceptable. First Edition. 1938 first edition, Charles Scribner's Sons (New York), 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches tall red cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped ($2.00) dust jacket, dark blue lettering to front cover and spine, fore page edges untrimmed, 313 pp. Slight soiling and… edgewear to covers, with very minor bumping to the lower tips. Vertical age toning to the front half of the two blank free-endpapers, with very slight toning to the title page and last page of text. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean and unmarked - in an unclipped dust jacket that presents handsomely in a clear archival Brodart sleeve, though it suffers from significant flaws: the jacket is completely split vertically down the center of the spine, features a second tear extending halfway up the spine panel, and exhibits general soiling, chipping, and edgewear. ~SP14~ [2.0] Murder in Newport is a classic Golden Age 'society mystery' that unfolds within the exclusive, gated enclaves of Rhode Island's elite. When a sudden death by apparent poisoning disrupts the summer social season, the ensuing investigation peels back the veneer of high society. The author, Gerard B. Lambert (1886-1967), wrote what he knew. Lambert was a prominent American businessman who served as president of the Gillette Safety Razor Company and famously pioneered the marketing of Listerine. An accomplished yachtsman and amateur archaeologist, his foray into mystery writing remains a fascinating, highly scarce piece of literature tied directly to Newport's historical upper crust.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Interesting provenance: From the library of Stacy Lloyd III, Paul Mellon's stepson. Inscribed by author Gerard B. Lambert to Matt Daiger. First printing (A on copyright page). Hardcover Bound in publisher's blue cloth. Gilt title to cover and spine. Good binding and cover. Light fo…xing to endpapers. This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US. This copy also contains several pieces of related ephemera including two typed letters from confirming the acquisition of the book for Stacy Lloyd from Daiger. Also a handwritten letter from the author to Daiger (signed Jerry). Gerard Barnes Lambert (1886-1967) is widely known as the âFather of Halitosis,â for his aggressive marketing of Listerine mouthwash. Good news for guardians of good taste (pardon the expression) is that Lambertâs daughter, Rachel Lowe Lambert Lloyd âBunnyâ Mellon (1910-2014), was a great pal of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. His father Jordan Wheat Lambert (1851-1889) was a native of Alexandria, Virginia. He named his first company Lambert Pharmacal Co.; it later became the Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Co. The younger Lambert fought in World War I and then joined his fatherâs firm. Around 1922 he glommed on to the medical term for bad breath: âHalitosis.â Listerine to the rescue. When he became president of the firm in 1923, the younger Lambert turned his focus to advertisingâ"aggressive advertising. He would later attribute his business successes to an independent turn of mind. In his memoir, All Out of Step. âThere is one philosophy I have about advertising that, so far in my life, has never met with approval by anyoneâ¦It is my belief that if a company has a certain amount of advertising, it can wisely spend an additional dollar on advertising if that dollar brings in not only an additional dollar and centâ¦I shudder to think what would have happened if we had run a stupid old-fashioned budget in the Lambert Pharmacal Company in 1922. A committee of stuffy men and accounts would have sat aroundâ¦and we would probably still be earning $115,000 a year!â. Signed.

Add to basketCharles Scribner's Sons. 1938. First edition, first issue with "A" to reverse of title page. DW. Slight lean to spine, six tiny puncture marks, perhaps from a stapler, to upper board, not going through to inside front cover. Pages browned. Generally a sound copy of a very scarce item in very worn, creased and soiled wrapper that… has one piece of tape on the inside. Gerard Barnes Lambert, (born May 15, 1886, St. Louis, Mo., U.S.died Feb. 25, 1967, Princeton, N.J.), American merchandiser and advertiser who marketed his father's invention of Listerine mouthwash by making bad breath a social disgrace. After graduating from Princeton and studying architecture at Columbia University, Lambert fought in World War I and then joined his father's firm, Lambert Pharmacal Co. The firm later became Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Co. As president of the firm in 1923, Lambert focussed on the advertising efforts for Listerine, an antiseptic that his father had invented. To carry out his advertising ideas, Lambert formed the advertising agency of Lambert & Feasley. With Lambert in charge, the pharmaceutical firm saw profits increase 60 times. He sold his share of the business in 1928 and, after a three-year retirement, became president of the Gillette Safety Razor Co., which was in need of a reorganization. In three years he turned the company around by helping to develop the Gillette Blue Blade. Relying on his architectural training, Lambert developed plans for the first low-cost subsidized housing for New Brunswick and Princeton, N.J., in 1938. Lambert was also a proficient yachtsman, an amateur archaeologist, an art collector, and a writer. His works include a mystery, Murder in Newport (1938), a yachting memoir, Yankee in England (1937), and his autobiography, All out of Step: A Personal Chronicle (1956).
