L'enquête se déroula de 1697 à 1700 et avait pour but de présenter un tableau exact du royaume. Lambert d'Herbigny a été intendant de cette province de 1694 à 1700. Il a commencé son enquête en 1697 en envoyant un questionnaire aux curés des cent-trente-quatre paroisses. Mais, craignant des conséquences sur le montant de la taille pour leurs paroissiens, les curés ont minoré les ressources agricoles de leur paroisse et leurs réponse n'ont pratiquement pas été utilisé dans ces "Mémoires", par l'Intendant. Ces mémoires circulaient sous forme manuscrite et rares sont les exemplaires qui nous sont parvenus. Il n'a été imprimé qu'en 1902. Le mémoire original, vraisemblablement gardé par son auteur, n'a pas été retrouvé. De nombreuses copies circulèrent rapidement. L'édition critique (CTHS, 1992) en recense 74. Notre exemplaire est une copie supplémentaire, mais ayant appartenu, si l'on en croit son célèbre ex-libris manuscrit, à Denis Guyon de Sardière (1674-1759), fils de l'entrepreneur du canal de Briare et petit neveu de Madame Guyon. Bibliophile réputé, il acheta la bibliothèque du château d'Anet en 1724. A sa mort, sa bibliothèque fut rachetée par le duc de La Vallière au prix de 26 500 livres.Le présent manuscrit ne figure pas dans le catalogue de la vente éditée en 1760. Notre exemplaire est une copie moins développée que le manuscrit de référence retenu pour l'édition critique, mais elle semble avoir été faite avant 1701 : dans le chapitre "Etat militaire", la charge de bailly du Beaujollois dépend de Monsieur à cause de la seigneurie de Beaujeu.[Monsieur, frère de Louis XIV meurt en 1701].
