The magnificent art deco work contains kabalistic and astrological attributions described in Aleister Crowley's Book of Thoth. The art deco artwork of the Thoth is rich in Egyptian symbolism. To each of the twenty-two Major Trumps of the tarot is assigned, by tradition, a Hebrew letter and a path on the Tree of Life, as well as an astrological sign, element, or planet. The deck also reflects Crowley's interest in alchemy and magic. The original Crowley Thoth Tarot has attracted a worldwide following, both for its striking beauty and for its complex depiction of occult knowledge. Since its initial publication in 1969, the deck has never been out of print. The painter Frieda Harris was herself an Egyptologist and worked about 1200 symbols into the 78 cards! These cards are fascinating in the depth of thinking which they reveal. The Thoth Tarot was created by the famous Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947). Lady Frieda Harris (1877 - 1962) painted the cards. Although Lady Harris knew little about Tarot and its symbolism, under the guidance of Crowley she transposed all subtilities of his ideas into her paintings. Many a card was painted in several versions, until one of them was approved by Crowley. The Crowley Thoth Tarot took over five years to be completed. It was first published in 1969, after the death of both Crowley and Lady Harris. Diese Tarotkarten sind nach dem Engländer Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947) benannt und wurden von ihm und der Malerin Lady Frieda Harris (1877 - 1962) geschaffen. Er war ein Okkultist und großer Kenner der alten Einweihungswege und verband die Motive der Tarotkarten mit der Welt der Magie, der Alchemie, der Astrologie, der Kabbala und den Mythen der Völker, vor allem der alten Ägypter. Crowley gründete auf Sizilien die Abtei Thelema und gehörte dem freimaurerischen O.T.O. (Ordo Templi Orientis) an, den er 1925 übernahm. Lady Frieda Harris war seine Schülerin und malte unter seiner Anleitung 5 Jahre lang an den 78 Bildern, die zur Grundlage für die heutigen Crowley-Tarotkarten wurden. Das Tarotdeck besteht aus 22 Karten, Große Arkana oder Trumpfkarten, z.B. Der Magier, Die Kaiserin, Der Teufel, Glück, Das Universum. Jacket chipped at spine ends and corners, with a couple long closed tears from top edge on front and rear panel and smaller tears along spine with tape repair to verso, along with a few spots of faint dampstaining at fore-edge and tail, and some general smudging and scuffing to surface.
