Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. The Song of the Ainur Inspired by JRR Tolkien Edited by Elizabeth Currie Illuminated by Ruth Lacon Stunning and totally unique book containing 50 pages of original hand painted artwork by the well known Tolkien illustrator Ruth Lacon, illuminating and embellishing a medieval manuscript ba…sed on Tolkiens Ainulindale. Quote- The book is a result of a project which began in 2019, I began to research Tolkiens Ainulindale, discovering in the process that his own final version has never been published in full, and to consider how to turn it into a work of art by itself. First I had to create a text which I felt was as close as possible to Tolkiens own intentions. Then I produced the initial template pages for the art. At the same time I created the fiction of the found manuscript which, like Tolkiens account of translating the Red Book of Westmarch in the forward of the first edition of The Lord of The Rings, is part of this work. The Song of the Ainur was painted in 2020 and 2021 in lockdown, the concentration required to make each page a unique work of art became something soothing. A beautifully illuminated medieval manuscript beautifully bound in red leather with gilt titles and spine compartments by Temple Bookbinders. Gilt tooling to front, rear and inside of boards, rare antique endpapers. Also housed in beautiful matching clam shell box again by Temple Bookbinders. The 50 original art pages with text illuminations are all protected with tissue paper between every page. Then another 50 pages of explanation of the whole project, history and description and inspiration page by page for each piece of original art and context with the text. The Goose and Ear of Corn emblem on the spine denotes this is the Illuminated Much Wenlock manuscript in a 14th Century style. The Text is based on the first parts of The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien. It is a beautiful and unique read which is both emotional and spiritual. The work involved is hand painting each individual page would take days for each page. This is a truly unique book, one of a kind and for the Tolkien collector. Original pieces of art by Ruth Lacon are valuable and highly collected and to have 50 in one book and bound in this style is a great opportunity to collect something that is unique. There were only 6 copies of this text produced, this is totally unique with the 50 pages of original art and this exquisite binding and presentation. The most beautiful Tolkien related book I have seen. Any questions please contact Andy at SOA Books on 07785110512, Tolkien specialists. Listed on ABE Books and ebay where more pictures can be found.
