This work provides the first comprehensive biography of the three Redouté brothers, Antoine-Ferdinand, Pierre-Joseph and Henri-Joseph. Originating from humble origins in the Ardennes, they all took root in Paris where Antoine-Ferdinand became a decorative painte…r. By contrast, Pierre-Joseph and Henri-Joseph embarked as botanical illustrators on a scientific and aesthetic career including numerous contributions to the prestigious royal paintings on vellum. The central figure of this work is Pierre-Joseph, whose accurate illustrations document science during the late phase of the Enlightenment, throughout the turbulences of the French Revolution, the Napoleonic era and into the Restoration. Thus, Pierre-Joseph provided works for Empress Josephine and Queen Maria Amalia. An indefatigable worker, he produced an enormous number of botanical illustrations, many of a very high calibre. A large number of which were reproduced as engravings for a long list of publications which multiplied by many times the effect of his work. His association with the new Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, but also notably with C.-L. L'Héritier and the Geneva botanist A. P. de Candolle, ensured successive commissions. Henri-Joseph joined the scientific team that accompanied Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, documenting plants, animals and artefacts. Although his output was more geared towards paintings of animals, he was frequently asked to contribute botanical works for Pierre-Joseph. In essence, the focus of this book is not on the written record but on the pictorial. Furthermore, it offers a panorama of the travellers, collectors, scientists, gardeners and illustrators in one of the great centres of the time - Paris. [9782383270201].

Il 15 dicembre 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794-1868), docente di botanica presso l'Università di Monaco di Baviera e direttore dei Regi giardini botanici, fu sepolto in una bara ricoperta di foglie di palma fresche. Le fronde alludevano alla sua opera pionieristica Historia n…aturalis palmarum: opus tripartitum (Storia naturale delle palme: un'opera in tre volumi), pubblicata tra il 1823 e il 1853. Questa raccolta enciclopedica di 240 mirabili illustrazioni cromolitografiche si basava sulle spedizioni di Martius in Brasile e Perù. Dal 1817 al 1820, infatti, lo studioso percorse oltre 2.250 km nel bacino dell'Amazzonia per indagarne la storia naturale e le tribù indigene insieme allo zoologo Johann Baptist von Spix. Ne risultò un catalogo senza eguali di tutti i generi conosciuti della famiglia delle palme, che delineava la moderna classificazione delle palme, descriveva tutte quelle presenti in Brasile e ne realizzava le prime mappe biogeografiche. Una rarità del volume in folio di Martius è quella di comprendere diagrammi a sezione trasversale per rendere la struttura di questi alberi possenti, che altrimenti gli abitanti dell'Europa centrale avrebbero faticato a immaginare con esattezza. Altrettanto eccezionali sono i paesaggi a colori in cui sono ritratte le varie palme, che spesso si ergono solitarie nella loro semplice ed elegante bellezza. Pagg. 512, rilegato.

Their recent exhibition, curated by the author who is a Professor at the Free University of Berlin an…d director of the Botanical Garden in Dahlem, prompted this catalogue. The French and English text is printed in smaller type below the main German version. Although the scope of this masterly survey of 100 botanical paintings and drawings ranging from the Byzantine era (pre-512 AD) to the present day is limited to works held in the Austrian National Library, this is hardly a handicap as they own a representative selection of published botanical art from most periods and a significant number of original works. Perhaps the most extraordinary, and poignant, choice is plate 95 which reproduces the original manuscript of Gams' article describing and illustrating a new species of Tyrolean fungus which later was found to be the source of an anti-rejection drug Cyclosporine.
