Published by The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Hyde…rabad Chapter and Max Mueller Bhavan; Goethe Institut Bombay. / In 1974 Hans Winterberg invited me to jointly photograph the historical architecture of Golconda and Hyderabad. By organizing a photo exhibition the Max Mueller Bhavan/Goethe Institute intended to support the local heritage movement: by showing the buildings Hyderabad citizens and politicians were daily exposed to, through the eyes of foreign photographers we were hoping to create interest for the beauty and uniqueness of the inherited architecture. We were trying not to just document the endangered sites but to make the aesthetic quality of the buildings adequately visible by using them as material for independent compositions. Special lights, foregrounds and associations of people and objects were to stimulate a visual encounter with the buildings and to arouse the observers curiosity, his feelings and thoughts. The architecture was to be seen as a manifestation of the collective memory and as a necessary element of developing an urban identity.Twenty years later, in 1996, on request of the local conservationists, Peter Bumke, the then director of Max Mueller Bhavan, invited us to photograph Golconda and Hyderabad once again. In the meantime, the situation had changed dramatically: though the protection movement had gained ground and could claim some success a number of buildings had been put under legal protection the rapid development of the city (from 1.8 million in 1975 to 5 million in 1996) had generated forces who were viewing the architectual heritage merely as an attraction for the tourist industry or as a fashionable accessoire for the nouveau riches at most.
