"Although experimental work directed toward the obvious procedure of intramedullary nailing of fractures of the shafts of long bones had been conducted by German surgeons during the twentieth century, an effective method appeared only in 1940 with the publication of Gerhard Küntscher's (1900-1972) report. This appeared in the German literature during the opening months of World War II. It was first seen by non-German surgeons among hospitalized German prisoners of war in France in 1945. The results were so dramatic that within a short time literally thousands of cases were reported for fractures of all bones of the extremities. As in all spectacular new surgical procedures the method was perhaps at first overused but after its first decade settled down into a controlled but important new addition to the resources of fracture therapy."
