De hoofdfiguren van "De laatste winter" zijn de Russische fysicus Paul Kolodner en de Schotse salespromotor John Ax. Zi jhebben niets anders met elkaar gemeen dan dat zij zo'n vijftien jaar geleden in d…ezelfde Constallatioin naar Zuid-Amerika zijn gevlogen en geen van beiden ooit weer naar Europa zijn teruggekeerd. Kolodner vindt zijn bestemming in het altijd zomerse Caracas, waar hij zittend op zijn terras wegdroomt in fantasieën over denkmachines die hij zal ontwerpen, over vakanties die hij zal ondernemen en over zijn buurvrouw Zoraima, waar hij iets mee zal beginnen. Ax, verbonden aan de Britse ambassade in het vaak zo door de koude oceaanmist getekende Lima, verzorgt filmavonden, bezoekt party's en probeert de rest van zijn tijd door te komen met kleine 'affaires', die altijd anders verlopen dan hij zich wenst. Beiden verkeren in een, voor hen zelf, even aangename als uitzichtloze positie.

Adam heet de automaat en hij krijgt een lichaam, gaat zelfs een vrouw liefhebben, maar wordt ten slotte toch ontmanteld. Door hem als hoofdpers…oon te kiezen heeft Krol zich in staat gesteld om de mensen en de wereld te bekijken vanuit een ongebruikelijk standpunt, het standpunt van de computer. Aangezien de intelligentie van de computer, z'n inzicht, geprogrammeerd wordt door mensen (zelfs Adams menswording is in het programma inbegrepen) levert zijn kijk op de dingen niet iets onmenselijks op, maar juist iets heel ontroerends. Adam doorziet gebeurtenissen, bewegingen in de werkelijkheid en denkprocessen, alsof hij vanuit de absolute stilstand het diepgaandste oordeel heeft over wat er in het domein van de beweging geschiedt. 'Ik ben dood en daarom denk ik,' zegt hij ergens. Door het hele boek heen speelt de metafoor met het schrijven; het is namelijk de schrijver zelf die door alle kieren (regels wit) in dit proza heen hoorbaar is.De man achter het raam is intelligent, beeldend, humoristisch, spannend. Gerrit Krol neemt een volstrekt eigen plaats in in de Nederlandse literatuur, door zijn combinatie van alfa- en bèta-elementen, waarbij het geheel zich in elk detail weerspiegelt. In 1986 werd hem de Constantijn Huygensprijs toegekend.
