cloth, dust jacket. Leti, Gregorio (illustrator). 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. v, 117+(1) pages. First edition. Fine in fine dust jacket. Gregorio Leti was a seventeenth-century European writer of great popularity. His books of biographies, general histories and writings on the papacy were widely read and translated into many languages. Born in Milan and educated in a Jesuit school, Leti resisted the attempts of his uncle, the Bishop of Acquapendente in Umbria, to interest him in pursuing a profession in the church and instead chose to travel and write. He lived in the court of King Louis XIV in France and later in the court of King Charles II, who commissioned him to write a history of England. Leti was elected to the Royal Society, but had to flee England because of changing political climates. He died in Amsterdam in 1701.

The first edition bound in pictorial dust jacket, with wrap-around illustration, over brown decorative cloth boards lettered in gilt. The purpose of the Folger collection was to highlight the significance of William Shakespeare and his works to civilization. The library is intended to be a research library for scholars, and so ".the full significance of its holdings in fine and important bindings has not been generally recognized." (Foreword). The intention of this volume is to illustrate the variety, and importance of the bindings, and to collate the results in one volume for public consumption. More than 160 books were selected. The researchers sought to focus on the history and decoration of bookbindings. This is a near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. This copy has been in a private collection since publication.
