Trial and Failure; 4. Poetic Preliminaries; 5. Heroes Without Hybris; 6. Verse and Universe; 7. Prose of Pessimism; 8. A Rebel in Retrospect; notes, bibliography. First Edition, 1968. "German expressionism developed out of the socio-economic and intergenerational conflicts of the Wilhelmian era. Between 1910 and 1914 -- during the dying years of the Empire -- the authors who comprised the movement produced their most influential body of work. The momentum of these years carried expressionism in Germany through the years of World War I and the postwar revolution. With the founding of the Weimar Republic, however, new forms of literature developed, and expressionism was almost forgotten in the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II German writers returned to expressionsim as the basis for a new beginning in literature. With the critical re-evaluation of the expressionist, some writers of the movement were given greater value than in their own time. Among this group was Georg Heym, whose poetry is now considered to be among the most valuable work in any genre of expressionist literature. Heym's complete lack of idealism seems to be closer to the intellectual currents of the postwar world than does th eoften aggressive idealism of most of the other expressionists. It is his work and his own records of his life thta provide the only sufficiently detailed and coherent body of information concerning the spirit of the Wilhelmian era, the individual personality, and the creative work of literature." from the jacket flap.
