Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Quarto 256x18.5 cm., wrappers, 21(1) pp. Chizh ("A most interesting magazine"), along with Ezh (Hedgehog), was an important children's magazine. The main consultant for these magazines was Samuil Marshak. that employed writers and artists of the avant-garde in temporary safe ground, as a means of employment, and an outlet for simple expression and inventiveness that avoided political propaganda. While Marshak general oversaw it, Evgenii Shvarts and Nikolai Oleinikov ran Chizh on a day-to-day basis. By 1937 however, the state censorship, previously limited to administrative oversight, began looking into both journals with severity, shutting down the offices and arresting many staff. Both journals were reopened and continued and enjoyed a popular readership for the next years under greater scrutiny and inserting political content. The earlier years are much sought after, and most collectible for their creative writing and illustrations. Many of the staff were members and supporters of the OBERIU absurdist group, including Daniil Kharms, Aleksandr Vvedenskii, Nikolai Zabolotskii, and Nikolai Oleinikov. The present number has cover design by L. Iudin, a tale by Zabolotsky, stories by Evgenii Shvarts, O. Berggolts, E. Kershner, A. Beliaev, with illustrations by G. Petrov, V. Konashevich, V. Vol'shtein, E. Safronova, V. Kurdov, and P. Kondrat'ev, and children's poems and back cover graphics. Kornel Chukovskii is quoted as saying about both Chizh and Ezh "Never in Russia, neither before nor after, were there such sincerely cheerful, truly literary, mischievous children's magazines." A remarkably crisp and firm copy. Quite rare, OCLC finds no institutional holdings found for any issues of this journal. L. Iudin, V. Konashevich (illustrator).…

Some wear to board edges, small stains to boards, spine covered in clear tape. Text is in Russian. Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright. This novel, originally published in 1860, is highly autobiographical; it recounts Turgenev's infatuation with a young neighbor in the country, Catherine Shakovskoy (the Zinaida of the novella), an infatuation that lasted until Turgenev's discovery that Catherine was in fact his own father's mistress. The book is illustrated by Vladimir Mikhaylovich Konashevich (1888-1963), a Russian graphic artist and illustrator. v. Konashevich (illustrator).…
