This book covers all the woodcuts produced up to the present time of publication. Steinhardt is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Jewish art. In 1955, he was awarded the First International… Prize for engraving at the Biennial. His work bridges German Expressionism and Jewish visual tradition, giving a distinctive voice to Jewish experience in the 20th century. Branded a degenerate artist by the Nazis, he left Germany in 1933 and settled in Jerusalem. A very nice near fine copy bound in brown cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, in a good unclipped pictorial dust jacket with wear to corners, chipping along the bottom edge of front panel, light chipping to spine ends and a small closed tear to upper edge of front panel.
