In 1955, he was awarded the First International Prize for engraving at the Biennial. His work bridges German Expressionism and Jewish visual tradition, giving a distinctive voice to Jewish experience in the 20th century. Branded a degenerate artist by the Nazis, he left Germany in 1933 and settled in Jerusalem.
