Novel about the itinerant and emotionally trying existence of Army wives -- migrating around the country following their soldier-husbands from base to base, taking up quarters in rooming houses or cheap apartments in the adjacent towns (the citizens of which are often either indifferent or openly hostile to their presence), desperate for employment, seeking consolation and camaraderie among their own kind -- and all built around the hope of being able "to snatch a few hours at night with their men." Oddly, throughout this book the idea that the men might be eventually posted overseas, in harm's way, is rarely brought up by any of the characters; in fact, the only "action" the soldiers in the story ever see is when they are dispatched to Detroit, to help put down a race riot!
