"Seltene Flugschrift aus der Feder des preuß. Leutnants und späteren Generalfeldmarschalls Karl Friedrich von Knesebeck (1768-1848). ? "Die Schrift ist ein sehr merkwürdiges Spiegelbild der Stimmung im preußischen Heere vor dem Baseler Frieden. Die Armee hatte damals . das Ansehn einer kleinen militärischen Republik und drängte mit Ungestüm zum Frieden mit Frankreich. [?] So fand sich der junge, literarisch vielfach tätige Offizier veranlaßt, Hardenberg ein Memoire zu überreichen, in dem er die Einwände gegen den Frieden widerlegte. Diese Denkschrift erweckte in ihm die Lust, auch öffentlich für den Frieden zu wirken, und so entstand die erwähnte Schrift. Um keinen Zweifel übrigzulassen, ob Frankreich wirklich den Frieden wolle, legte er dem ersten Kopfe Frankreichs, wie er ihn nennt, dem Abbé Sieyès eine pathetische Rede für den Frieden in den Mund, die mit der Denkschrift an Hardenberg vielfach wörtlich übereinstimmt. [?] Übrigens muß die Broschüre großes Aufsehen erregt haben; denn der französische Politiker, dessen Namen man so keck benutzt hatte, fühlte sich veranlaßt, ein paar Monate darauf auf dem Umschlage seiner Selbstbiographie die Rede für die freche Fälschung eines Emigranten zu erklären. Diese Bezeichnung ist nun freilich sowenig zutreffend, als die Behauptung ., Hardenberg habe diese Rede drucken lassen. Bruders über die Gefechte von Kulm und Pirna anliegend wieder zurück. Hätten wir doch mehrere solcher Werke als Ihr H. Bruder uns nun zwei geliefert hat! In dem letzteren hat es mir eine besondere Freude gemacht, dass meinem verstorbenen vieljährigem Freunde Kleist [d. i. General Friedrich Kleist v. Nollendorf], so wie dem Prinzen Eugen von Würtenberg, die ihnen gebührende Gerechtigkeit wiederfährt. [.]". Bei dem retournierten Werk handelt es sich um "Die Kriegsereignisse zwischen Peterswalde, Pirna, Königstein und Priesten im August 1813 und die Schlacht bei Kulm" (Dresden 1845). - K. F. von dem Knesebeck machte sich als Stratege und Diplomat in den Koalitionskriegen verdient. Er war an den preußischen Bemühungen beteiligt, Zar Alexander I. von einem frühen Friedensschluss mit Napoleon abzubringen, was den verheerenden Ausgang des Russlandfeldzugs herbeiführte.
