Né Balthasar Klossowski de Rola à Paris en 1908, dans une famille aristocratique polonaise devenue allemande à la suite des partitions de la Pologne, il grandit au sein de milieux intellectuels et artistiques des plus raffinés entre Paris, Genève et Berlin. Etonnamment précoce, il développa très tôt une fascination à la fois pour l'Orient et pour les grands maîtres européens - influences qui transparaissent dans le calme émanant de ses peintures et dans leur étrange intemporalité.
