Softcover. Stapled. Condition: Very Good +. AUSTRALIAN ART Aboriginal Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Fire-Works Gallery, Newstead, 2005.For almost 20 years, Rod Moss has been painting pictures of his friends. In itself, this is nothing out of the ordinary. What is extraordinary is that Moss's friends happen to be Easten Arrernte tribe, living in town camps in Alice Springs. These paintings depict Aboriginal people in common places.Rod Moss is an artist, a writer, a community member and a family man living in Central Australia. He is the author of the award wining Hard Light of Day, exploring his relationship with the local Aboriginal Arrente people in Alice Springs, the traditional owners of that country. Rod has also had his paintings shown globally around the world, and is an important figure in modern Australian art. He was born and raised in Boronia, Vic, but has lived in the NT for over three decades. His fascination with the landscape, culture and the lives of the people there runs deep within Rod, and is a source of ongoing inspiration.Rod Mossâs luminous drawings are born out of decades of intimate relationship, conversation, engagement, and profound friendship with Arrernte peoples and their beloved country. The drawings are crafted, as Moss puts it, with an intent ââ¦to immerse the eye in intimate detail.â Moss delights in the detail. He celebrates it. âWhat bounty,â he exclaims. But without the craft, the artistry, and the drawing skills, Moss would not have been able to respond so powerfully to old Patrickâ Ampetyane Hayesâs expansive call to depict his âfat country.â After years of practice, observation, immersion, and above all, of walking alongside his many Arrernte guides and mentors, Moss can indeed âsing the language of the curve.â And much more. Mossâs drawings, and the poetic words that accompany them, are a rapturous singing of country, a symphony composed of loving detail, a tender expression of gratitude â" the micro made epic. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. South Melbourne, Oxford University Press, 2000 [first edition, first impression]. Quarto, xxvi, 758 pages with 8 maps and 373 illustrations plus 37 illustrations in colour and 2 colour endpaper maps. Papered boards; covers lightly rubbed and marked; bottom corners slightly bumped; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper lightly rubbed and slightly creased. 'The suppressed edition'. We have handled a copy of this book in which was loosely inserted a newspaper cutting from the 'Weekend Australian', October 20-21, 2001. It contained an article by Susan McCulloch-Uehlin detailing the quiet suppression of the first edition of this book. A lengthy sentence on page 105 relating to Grahame Walsh and the Bradshaw paintings in the Kimberley was rewritten for subsequent impressions of the book. The original version in this edition states that Walsh's claims 'have no archaeological basis and are informed by racist perceptions of what Aboriginal people are capable of'.
