Begun shortly after the Civil War, it became, not long ago, a Registered National Historic Landmark. Today it is undergoing an unprecedented renewal program that will cost $150 million and will have taken a total of fifteen years to complete, a task made necessary as the park has deteriorated during lamentable periods of civic mismanagement over the last century. The author first describes the transformation, under the direction of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, of a bleak, rocky site, more than one-and-a-quarter square miles in the middle of New York City, into a restorative enclave of nature. He then traces the park's slow decline, and ends with some of the happy details of rehabilitation, that will return the park, as much as possible, to its acclaimed original state. Along the way he touches on the park's wildlife, its botany, geology, and safety (or lack of it); the scores of user activities; the various park commissioners and mayors who have left their mark (for better or worse) on the park; and the crucial role of the Central Park Conservancy."
