Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. This book is in Good only condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some lightish bumping and rubbing. There are several tiny nicks to the spine ends, and noticeable toning / sunningto the spine and front and rear panels, along with spots of foxing / discoloration. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper, along with an ink stamp from the Park Chapel Crouch End Lending Library. "Having 'fallen in love' with Australia in 1863, King returned to Victoria where he continued to promote the Protestant missionary cause in the Pacific. He was Congregational minister at Sandhurst (Bendigo) in 1874-81 and at South Melbourne in 1881-89. From 1883 he gradually assumed much of the work of the L. M. S. In Australia, particularly in Melbourne as the president of its Victorian auxiliary, and revisited Samoa on deputation in 1887. While in London in 1889 he was invited by the directors to become their organizing agent for Australasia. For twenty-two years, until his resignation in 1911, King was an important link between missionaries in the field, the home society and government, particularly the administrations of British New Guinea and Papua. He was on terms of close friendship with George Brown, James Chalmers, Sir William MacGregor and Albert Maclaren. He claimed that his annual journeys in Australia and New Zealand averaged about 12,000 miles (19,000 km) and that he had 'the largest speaking acquaintance of any man in Australia'." Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Lot of 40 titles from the Arno / New York Times Series The American Negro, His History and his literature. HEAVY Package - pickup can be arranged at our public storefront in downtown Manhattan. All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning. A series of philosophical writings in blank verse, reflecting the author's state of mind following several bereavements, it was one of the most popular poems of the century, influencing Goethe and Edmund Burke. Contains frontispiece engraving, A2, [blank], 315 pp + 3 pp publisher's listings. Engraving is printed to the verso of the first leaf, rear end paper absent, staining from the leather turn-in's front and back.
