Im Laufe der Zeit haben sich verschiedene technologische Entwicklungen auf die Bereitstellung von Auskunftsdiensten ausgewirkt, insbesondere nach der Einführung von Online-Bibliotheksdiensten. Mit dem rasanten Wachstum der IKT hat sich auch die Rolle der Bibliotheken verändert, sie ist mehrdimensional und benutzerfreundlich geworden, wobei die virtuellen Auskunftsdienste eine wichtige Rolle beim Informationsaustausch und beim einfachen Zugang zu den Nutzern in Echtzeit spielen, insbesondere in den akademischen Bereichen werden die oben genannten virtuellen Auskunftsdienste von den Informationssuchenden ausgiebig genutzt. Es gibt jedoch viele Unzulänglichkeiten und technische Probleme, mit denen beide Seiten, d.h. Bibliothekare und Benutzer, konfrontiert sind. Deshalb ist es wichtig, die VRS und ihre Anwendung zu untersuchen und Lösungen für die Probleme zu finden, die bei ihrer Anwendung auftreten.
